Chapter 30: The Truth Revealed, The True Understanding of the Demon Sect
It seemed this was the Yuanmo Sect’s base in Jiangting City.
Su Yi didn’t immediately follow after them. Now that he had stepped onto someone else’s turf, he had no way of knowing how many hidden sentries might be watching both inside and out. If he rashly charged in, he could easily trigger an alarm.
He focused his true energy, sharpening his senses and listening intently. Countless chaotic sounds flooded his ears, but his five senses far surpassed the limits of ordinary people. After carefully filtering through the noise for a while, he detected several breathing patterns within the compound. Pinpointing the dead angles, he slipped to a spot at the base of the wall. With a light, agile movement, he leapt onto the protruding wooden beam of one of the houses.
From this vantage point, he could take in most of the layout of the compound.
Matching the breathing he had sensed earlier with the positions, Su Yi identified the sentries: one was hidden inside the rockery in the courtyard, another behind the window of the house on the left.
Now that he knew their locations, it was easy to plan his route. After thinking it through, he unleashed the technique “Wind and Sand in Motion,” stirring up a violent gust. The wind howled, sweeping up fallen leaves and rattling doors and windows. Taking advantage of the commotion, Su Yi darted forward, following the four he’d been tracking.
They entered the largest house in the compound. Su Yi stuck close to the wall, slipped to the side of the house, and with a nimble leap, landed soundlessly on the roof. He pressed himself flat, his toes barely making a sound on the tiles.
He prepared for the worst—this base of the Yuanmo Sect might harbor powerful experts. It was safer to keep his distance and use his exceptional hearing to eavesdrop.
With utmost care, Su Yi sent a subtle, yin-infused force through his fingertip, silently opening a small hole in the roof tile. He placed his ear over the hole.
Voices inside came through clearly.
“Bi Zhongyou, tell me where that old fox Duan Yan is hiding, and I’ll spare your life.” A clear, cold woman’s voice rang out.
Su Yi’s heart leapt. He hadn’t detected this person’s presence at all before she spoke. Given how keen his hearing was, far beyond that of even first-rate experts, her internal strength had to surpass his by a significant margin.
“Elder Feng, it’s not that I’m unwilling—I truly don’t know Elder Duan Yan’s whereabouts. Even if I did, I’d never betray him. Now, with the sect master’s seat still undecided, you and Miss Wenxiang causing such internal strife—aren’t you afraid of demoralizing the disciples and our allied forces?”
His words were cut off by a muffled groan.
“My methods are none of your concern, little second-generation disciple. After suffering my Blood-burning Finger, I’m curious how long that stubbornness will last. Take him away! Assign someone to watch him closely—make sure he doesn’t die.”
“Yes, Elder.”
After Bi Zhongyou was taken away, Elder Feng asked a few questions, then dismissed several more people until only three voices remained in the room.
“Master, I think Bi Zhongyou is tough, but he probably doesn’t know where that old fox Duan Yan is. Why spare his life?”
“Of course I know he likely doesn’t know. Duan Yan was gravely wounded by me and Wenxiang working together—he probably lost both legs. Given his suspicious nature, he trusts no one. But I’m certain he’s still near Jiangting City. The chance to advance our sect’s supreme art is right before us; that old fox will definitely try to seize the opportunity, dreaming of mastering the ultimate technique, seizing the sect master’s seat, and ruling the land.”
“As for sparing Bi Zhongyou, Yun Qing, you must understand: if I do inherit the sect master’s position, I’ll need to consolidate all internal forces. Not a shred of power can be wasted. He’s led the Jiangling branch well for years—naturally, I should give him another chance. In short, he can’t die yet.”
“Enough about that. Obtaining the True Solution is our top priority now. Ling Yuan, any news from Wenxiang?”
“Reporting, Elder—Miss Wenxiang sent word this morning. She’s been following Chi Lingxiao’s young son and his group by boat. They should reach Sparrowstone Point outside Jiangting City by afternoon.”
Su Yi was deeply shaken. He hadn’t expected to hear news of Chi Lingxiao’s son from the Yuanmo Sect. Did this mean that to complete his mission, he would have to go against the Yuanmo Sect?
Countless questions rushed through his mind. Why was Chi Lingxiao entangled with the Yuanmo Sect? What exactly was this “True Solution”?
Elder Feng let out a long sigh. “Three hundred years! It’s been three centuries since Sect Master Lu led our Yuanmo Sect to unprecedented heights, dominating the world. For three hundred years, we’ve been in decline. Not only do the righteous sects see us as a thorn in their side, but the other demonic sects have also joined forces to suppress and destroy us, terrified we’ll regain our former glory.”
Her clear voice turned cold. “I, Feng Fei, swear before all our ancestors: if I seize the True Solution and master the supreme art, I will sweep away the righteous sects, unify the demonic world, and restore the Yuanmo Sect’s peerless prestige!”
“We disciples will follow Elder and Master faithfully, wishing you an early mastery of the supreme art and the unification of the demonic sects!”
Listening to this fervent display from his hiding place, Su Yi couldn’t help but feel his teeth ache from the sheer intensity.
“All right. Since Chi Lingxiao’s son will arrive in Jiangting this afternoon, you should prepare. Once the boy retrieves the True Solution, I expect not only that old fox Duan Yan, but also that harlot Danxia, to show themselves. If we can capture them both, our internal affairs will be settled.”
The two acknowledged the order, saluted, and left the room.
After they departed, Su Yi dared not linger. When a maid knocked, seeking to attend to Feng Fei, he seized the chance to slip off the roof and soon left the compound.
Back on the bustling street, Su Yi walked while reflecting on all he’d overheard at the Yuanmo Sect base.
This unexpected detour had finally revealed the key points of his mission in this world, as well as the true enemy. No more groping in the dark, relying on wild guesses.
From their conversation, it was clear the Yuanmo Sect wanted something called the “True Solution” from Chi Lingxiao’s son, and it had to be retrieved somewhere in Jiangting. This object would allow the sect’s elder to master the supreme technique, suggesting it was a lost treasure of the Yuanmo Sect.
But why would Chi Lingxiao’s son know the location of a lost Yuanmo Sect relic? Was his father part of the sect? Yet, from their conversation, that didn’t seem to be the case.
Moreover, the system’s directive was for him to safely escort Chi Lingxiao’s son back home to Guangyang. Either the enemy wanted to silence him, or they still needed him after obtaining the True Solution. Reasoning it out, Su Yi thought the latter more likely.
He allowed himself a small sigh of relief. As the saying goes, it’s easier to dodge a spear in the open than an arrow in the dark. If their aim was to kill him, he’d have little chance of survival. But if they only wanted to capture, that was far easier to deal with.
The problem now was that, judging from what he’d learned, the enemy’s strength was formidable—not to be underestimated. Apart from Duan Yan, whom he’d already dispatched by luck, there were at least three known top-tier experts, and who knew how many lesser ones lurking in the shadows.
As someone from the modern world, what’s the first reaction upon encountering danger?
This is the Daxing Dynasty, a land governed by law!
Su Yi decided to report to the authorities.
