At last they were ready. The two of them had become the very embodiment of jealousy.

“Move out.”

Mo Yu signaled to Nan Lingzi.

This was no game, no time for jokes, and happiness was out of the question.

They leapt forward one after the other, rolling across the lush green grass before coming to a halt.

“It’s so cold.” Lingzi’s lips were already tinged with blue. Mo Yu seemed unaffected, but vinegar beads on their bodies had frozen into icy clumps.

Mo Yu pointed at a few scattered zombies ahead, then drew a finger across his throat in a killing gesture.

Nan Lingzi nodded, pulling a butcher’s knife about thirty centimeters long from behind her back, gripping it tightly.

Mo Yu turned away with a grimace and drew a machete from his pant leg—his best weapon at the moment.

They split up, flanking two zombies from left and right.

A flash—

Icicles on the eaves reflected dazzling light. Watching the zombie collapse to the ground, Mo Yu finally felt the world had truly come to its end.

Turning to check on Nan Lingzi, Mo Yu broke out in a cold sweat.

He sprinted over and shoved her aside without caring about the noise.

A flash—

The zombie’s head split cleanly from its neck, tumbling away with a clatter.

Mo Yu grabbed the dazed Lingzi and dragged her into hiding, clamping a hand over her mouth until long moments passed.

“He was my neighbor. A very kind man,” Lingzi muttered, head bowed.

Mo Yu understood. “But if you don’t kill him, you’ll die too. He’s already dead—no thoughts, no feelings. Do you understand?”

Lingzi bowed her head, laying her hand gently atop Mo Yu’s. “I understand.”

I understand. From now on, I won’t let any zombie or human who means me harm go free, no matter the ties of family or friendship. But Mo Yu, you wouldn’t, would you?

As the number of zombies swelled, both Mo Yu and Lingzi grew uneasy.

Now they were hiding atop a large tree above the zombies; the tree had turned to ice, and the branches were uncomfortably cold beneath them.

“What now?” Mo Yu gestured to Lingzi.

Lingzi only spread her hands helplessly.

For the two of them, there was silence; for the horde of zombies, excitement.

Watching the swarm below, disgust and revulsion rose from the depth of their hearts.

Mo Yu shifted slightly, searching for a way down. The grass, the wall, the rooftop…

The grass was out of the question—too small an area, they’d make noise landing, and might even crush an unlucky zombie.

The wall… Mo Yu eyed the high wall ten meters away. Was she supposed to fly over it? Absurd!

That left only the rooftop.

But how would they get there?

How could they get there…
