055 - The Fight
"Stop it, stop fighting!" Xia Yuwei watched anxiously as the two exchanged blows, the blood on Lu Yichen’s face glaringly vivid beneath the moonlight.
In the past, after every fight, Lu Yichen would appear before her with a nonchalant air. Seeing her look of distress, he would secretly revel in the feeling—how wonderful it was to be cared for. That sense of being cherished made him all the more reckless, picking fights just to bask in her gentle concern in those fleeting moments.
Later on, it seemed she caught on. She would deliberately put on a stern face and ignore him. Yet, every time he acted spoiled, she would give in, tending to his wounds with meticulous care, cleaning them and wrapping them in fresh bandages.
They had fallen into a vicious cycle: his enjoyment, her distress.
It wasn’t as though she never scolded him. “Try getting into another fight and see what happens! You’ll regret it!”
He would simply grab her hand and press it against himself, lying down with a look of feigned resignation. “Then hit me now—go ahead!”
Xia Yuwei would break into a sweat. Had she run into a masochist?
She would raise her hand, yet could never bring herself to strike him. Each time, her touch was gentle, a softness that Lu Yichen would remember all his life.
Now, looking at the tall, fierce young man before her, she wondered: was he still, deep down, that mischievous, endearing boy?
Whenever they met, he spoke only harsh words. At the slightest provocation, he would shove her, his hands tightening around her neck. She couldn’t imagine what he might have done if Xin Xin hadn’t called out to him that day. He would kiss her with frenzied desperation, the taste of blood lingering in her mouth even now.
In any case, now that they had met again, Xia Yuwei felt she was losing her sense of who he was—until she saw the blood on his face. That streak of crimson, cruel and strange under the moon, made her heart ache as always, perhaps even more so, for it was tinged now with a bitter sorrow. Her eyes burned, her chest constricted.
“How long are you going to keep fighting? Lu Yichen, Senior Ye, please, stop!” Seeing the two of them locked in combat, seemingly having lost all reason and showing no intent to stop, Xia Yuwei moved closer.
“Tonight, I have to teach this bastard a lesson!” Ye Lifeng, seeing Xia Yuwei approach, stepped back a couple of paces, as if afraid the fight would spill over and hurt her. Toward Xia Yuwei, he was ever attentive, gentle to a fault. But he would never let off the boy who had hurt her!
He knew Lu Yichen—after all, he was the campus heartthrob, the son of a tycoon, Xin Xin’s boyfriend, rumored to be passionately in love. Who would have thought he’d secretly set his sights on Yuwei? The thought alone made Ye Lifeng’s blood boil.
“Teach me a lesson? That depends on whether you’re up to the task,” Lu Yichen sneered coldly. Up until now, he had fought Ye Lifeng haphazardly, not even bothering to use his taekwondo skills. “Since Weiwei asked me to stop, then—”
