The Weeping Person
The two men in black, as Luo Feifei’s bodyguards, were naturally the first to learn of what had happened to Lin Qi. They reported to Tang Long immediately. Dealing with Director Wang was merely a matter of convenience to them. After making sure Luo Feifei was calm, Tang Long quickly called Wei Qianzhong.
“Director Wei, wasn’t the Lu Hao matter already resolved? Why did Sun Xiaoyun arrest Lin Qi again?”
“Sun Xiaoyun?” The mention of her name made Wei Qianzhong’s head ache. There was nothing he could do—after all, her father was a provincial leader.
“I never told her to make any arrests,” Wei Qianzhong said. “That woman acted entirely on her own. But don’t worry, I’ll call her right now and have her release him.”
“Alright, sorry to trouble you,” Tang Long said, hanging up.
Wei Qianzhong immediately tried to contact Sun Xiaoyun.
But her phone was off.
Wei Qianzhong was at a loss.
“Forget it. I’ll deal with her when she returns to the bureau,” he said, setting down the phone, not taking the matter too seriously.
Yet he had no idea he would never get the chance—Sun Xiaoyun would not be coming back.
Because she never intended to return.
On the pitch-dark national highway, Sun Xiaoyun was driving, taking Lin Qi out of the city. Lin Qi sat in the passenger seat, his hands cuffed to the door handle. At first, he wasn’t concerned. He knew Tang Long would come to his rescue. Whether it was the Special Operations Bureau or the detention center, it didn’t matter to him.
But as he realized they weren’t heading for the Special Operations Bureau but instead were driving out of the city, his brow furrowed slightly.
“Where are you taking me?” Lin Qi asked, his expression blank.
“Interrogation at a different location,” Sun Xiaoyun replied. “You’re Tang Long’s savior. He’ll stop at nothing to rescue you, so I can’t keep you in Haitong City…”
She then recounted her own experience capturing Boss Chai.
“Lu Hao was killed by you, and Tang Long handled the aftermath. I know the whole story. You’d best confess and seek leniency…”
Lin Qi couldn’t help but hiss softly. This woman was truly persistent.
He didn’t want to harm a woman, much less someone from Special Operations, but he was running out of options. If she managed to secure solid evidence, things would get very complicated.
With the slightest movement of his fingers, a slender steel needle silently appeared. It was enough to pick the handcuffs.
But just then, the car came to a sudden stop, jolting Lin Qi so hard he almost crashed into the windshield.
“What are you doing?” Lin Qi snapped, turning angrily.
Sun Xiaoyun said nothing. She got out of the car, then circled to the other side.
“Get out,” she commanded, pressing her gun to him.
Lin Qi complied obediently.
He saw that they had stopped in front of a forest. As he puzzled over this, Sun Xiaoyun suddenly lowered her head and unlocked his cuffs.
“What on earth are you trying to do…” Lin Qi began, but Sun Xiaoyun had already looked up.
Her face was streaked with tears.
“What’s wrong with you?” Lin Qi asked in astonishment.
“Lin Qi, why did you kill?” Sun Xiaoyun’s eyes were red, tears streaming down her cheeks. “Was there really no other way? Why must you walk the path of crime?”
Lin Qi’s face turned grave.
“You deserve to die, you really do!” Sun Xiaoyun sobbed, striking him several times. “I don’t know what’s wrong with me—I actually fell in love with you! Damn it, how could I fall for a criminal?” She crouched down, covering her face with both hands, tears slipping through her fingers. “I thought I’d always choose the law, but maybe I overestimated myself!”
The night was dark, the wind was high.
Sun Xiaoyun’s cries carried far, far into the distance.
A flock of startled crows took flight from the woods.
“Go. Never come back!” Sun Xiaoyun wailed, “Don’t ever show up in Haitong City again, or I swear I’ll arrest you!”
Lin Qi didn’t know what to say. He reached out, trying to help Sun Xiaoyun up.
“Don’t touch me, you filthy criminal!” Sun Xiaoyun shoved him away in fury, her sobs growing even stronger. “Leave—right now—disappear from my sight!”
Lin Qi said nothing more, turning on his heel and walking away.
They were on a hillside; below lay the national highway, cars streaming by.
He could easily flag down a ride home.
Yet even as he reached the foot of the hill, he could still faintly hear Sun Xiaoyun’s weeping.
Unbelievable.
Helpless, Lin Qi turned back.
From a distance, he could see Sun Xiaoyun still crouched on the ground, sobbing.
He came up beside her, exasperated. “If it’s really that bad, maybe you should just take me back in… Please, stop crying, will you?”
Sun Xiaoyun was still sobbing uncontrollably.
“I’m not crying because of you… I just got a call—my father’s been dismissed…”
“Lin Qi, what am I going to do?!”
“I catch criminals every day, but my own father is one!”
“I can’t live without my father!”
Suddenly, Sun Xiaoyun threw herself into Lin Qi’s arms, wailing.
Lin Qi stiffened in surprise.
She cried and cried, soaking his shoulder with her tears.
No one knew how much time passed before Lin Qi finally let out a gentle sigh and patted her back.
“It’s alright. Leave it to me.”
His voice was steady and warm.
