Chapter 43: Two Women in Rivalry
After their wedding was called off, Lin Qi and Luo Feifei continued living together, each going about their own workdays. Luo Feifei’s job was fairly regular, the typical nine-to-five routine. Lin Qi, on the other hand, had a very different schedule due to the special nature of his work; when most people were having meals or relaxing, it was precisely when he, as a delivery rider, was busiest.
This meant that every evening after work, Luo Feifei could leisurely head to the market for groceries, then return home to wash up, watch dramas, and tidy the apartment. She considered these chores as paying her share of the rent; she couldn’t just live there for free.
It wasn’t until after nine o’clock that she’d start cooking, timing it so Lin Qi would be just about to come home. One evening, as she busied herself in the kitchen, she suddenly heard a noise in the living room. Grabbing a spatula, she hurried out.
“Brother-in-law, you’re back early tonight—” Luo Feifei began cheerfully, but then stopped, stunned. It wasn’t Lin Qi. It was Sun Xiaoyun.
Sun Xiaoyun, having calculated that Lin Qi would be home soon, had climbed in through the window and was now waiting on the sofa. The two women locked eyes. They knew each other, of course.
“How did you get in?” Luo Feifei asked in surprise.
Sun Xiaoyun jerked her chin toward the window. “Are you two living together now?” she asked.
Luo Feifei nodded.
They continued staring at one another. In that instant, it was as if sparks flew between them. Neither of these women was a fool; a single glance was enough to sense the hostility in the other. But as a special agent, Sun Xiaoyun’s gaze was far sharper. In just one exchange, Luo Feifei found herself outmatched and retreated flustered to the kitchen.
Back in the kitchen, Luo Feifei shook her spatula and muttered through clenched teeth, “Feifei, why are you afraid of her? She’s a special agent, not a monster! Besides, brother-in-law made it clear he doesn’t like her...”
Five minutes later, Luo Feifei brought the dishes out. Dropping her usual meek demeanor, she tried to appear more assertive, her face cold as she said, “Brother-in-law will be home soon. Would you like to join us for dinner?”
“Sure.” Sun Xiaoyun accepted without a hint of courtesy, taking a seat at the table.
Luo Feifei was left speechless. The two women sat facing each other once more.
“Let me try your cooking,” Sun Xiaoyun said, picking up her chopsticks and reaching for a piece of tofu.
“Have you no manners? Brother-in-law isn’t back yet!” Luo Feifei exclaimed, reaching out to slap Sun Xiaoyun’s arm.
Sun Xiaoyun, trained for such situations, instinctively grabbed Luo Feifei’s wrist in a swift counter.
“Ow—!” Luo Feifei cried out in pain.
Realizing what she’d done, Sun Xiaoyun hurriedly released her, but Luo Feifei was not about to let it go.
“Why did you grab my wrist?” she demanded, then, without thinking, bit Sun Xiaoyun’s arm. She didn’t know how to fight; biting was the only thing that came to mind.
“You dare bite me?!” Sun Xiaoyun was furious. She leapt up and pinned Luo Feifei to the floor. She considered using her police academy techniques but hesitated, worried that Luo Feifei couldn’t handle it.
“Then I’ll bite you back!” Sun Xiaoyun declared, bending down to sink her teeth into Luo Feifei’s shoulder.
“Ow!” Luo Feifei yelped, instinctively wrapping her arms around Sun Xiaoyun’s head.
At that moment, Lin Qi walked in the door.
He was greeted by a truly bizarre scene: Sun Xiaoyun sprawled atop Luo Feifei, the two women locked in a tight embrace, both yelling in distress.
“What are you two doing…?” Lin Qi asked, bewildered and at a loss.
The women scrambled to their feet in a panic.
“Brother-in-law, she bit me…” Luo Feifei complained, clutching her sore shoulder.
“She bit me first!” Sun Xiaoyun countered, showing Lin Qi the bite mark on her wrist.
It was as if two cats, fresh from a fight, were competing to show their injuries to their owner.
What on earth was going on? Lin Qi was at a complete loss. He turned to Sun Xiaoyun. “What are you doing here?”
Sun Xiaoyun hesitated, suddenly recalling her mission. She reached to her waist, and in the next instant, a gun was pointed at Lin Qi’s head.
“Don’t move,” she said coldly.
Luo Feifei, witnessing this, stumbled backward in terror, her face drained of all color.
Lin Qi, however, remained calm, only frowning slightly. “What’s gotten into you now?”
“Lin Qi, the truth about you killing Lu Hao is out. Come with me,” Sun Xiaoyun said expressionlessly, snapping handcuffs onto him.
“Let’s go!” Sun Xiaoyun gave Lin Qi a push.
“It’s all right. I’ll be back soon,” Lin Qi said reassuringly to the petrified Luo Feifei, his expression unchanged as he turned and walked out.
“You’ll never be back!” Sun Xiaoyun replied coldly.
The two of them left, one after the other.
Luo Feifei was left alone in the apartment, her breath coming in quick, frightened gasps. But she soon regained her composure.
So, it really was brother-in-law who killed Lu Hao.
Yet Luo Feifei wasn’t surprised at all; she had always suspected as much.
Now what should she do?
After a brief moment’s thought, she quickly pulled out her phone.
“Manager Wang, do you have Director Tang’s number? I need to reach him urgently!”
